A department library has been built up since 1992, supplying and completing the stock of the library of the Swiss Theatre Collection (STS) with a focus on scientific titles, e.g. monographs and periodicals on the History of Theatre, the Theory of Theatre, the Dramaturgy and Analysis of Performance.

Due to the fact that drama-historic developments can often only be understood considering their cultural context, the cultural history of Switzerland and Europe form an important focus.

While the STS concentrates on the collection of primary source material for documentary purpose, the library of the ITW encompasses scientific literature and documents on drama. The present collection of literature on „Commedia dell Arte“ is absolutely unique in Switzerland and forms a centre of acquisition that is constantly expanded with new publications and antiquarian titles. It is most likely that students as well as the general public will find the right literature in Berne.
